Training Mentors

Since 1996 the Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration in Region 4 has been successfully training mentors to work with youth involved in the juvenile court system. Research has demonstrated that the program has been successful ( some data on it can be found in this manual under the section titled Reclaiming Futures’ Mentoring Program Philosophy and Goals.) Therefore, it is recommended that the staff of the JRA Mentoring Program and their materials be used for the Reclaiming Futures Mentoring Program.

    Using the JRA Materials
JRA staff agreed to share a packet of their material they have used prior to a recent updating for 2003. The packet of material needs to be used as a whole and not used separately. The sequence has been carefully thought out for maximum impact in training.
    Scheduling Training
A one day, eight-hour training has yielded the best attendance and completion. Programs can schedule training events for the year and let prospective applicants know months in advance of the next training. Training usually need to be held at least quarterly.
